AC12003 Argumentation & Computers
Coordinator
Dr Alison Pease
Toggle Module Description
This module is concerned with arguing, critical thinking, and problem solving. Computing can be characterised as a problem solving activity in which solutions to problems are developed into computer software. However once a solution is found it is necessary, especially in commercial and industrial environments, to successfully communicate that solution to other people. Additionally, in many situations a person will be required to critically assess another person's problem solution. To account for these contexts, this module is split into three units which cover problem solving, argument construction, and critical analysis. The units work together to enable students to find solutions to problems, construct arguments that present their own position on a subject (argument construction), critically evaluate (critical analysis) the arguments of another, and work towards an alternative solution (again using problem solving).
